Happy 118th birthday to my grandpa, Robert McFarlane! No, he is obviously not still around to celebrate today, but did live to be 97. He passed away in 2001.
He was a lifelong farmer. He was born near Geddes, South Dakota, to Lewis and Lulu McFarlane. As a young man, he moved to Towner, Colorado, and farmed there for awhile, but moved back to Geddes in the late 1940s and stayed there for the rest of his life.
He's actually the one who introduced me to genealogy and triggered that spark of interest in the past. When I was about 11 and he was in his mid-80s, he sat me down with a suitcase full of 1800s photos and made me write on the back of all of them so they were identified. I'm so grateful for that so that I have so many names to go with the faces peering out at me from these old photos.
