I connected with a 90-year-old woman in South Dakota who is my mom's 2nd cousin. She has an absolute wealth of heirlooms and first-hand knowledge of our shared family of Norwegian immigrants.
In visiting her, she showed me this photo of my great grandfather's sister, Hilda Jensen, who was a nurse in WWI. My mom knew Hilda very well, but had no idea that Hilda actually went to France during the war. We had always believed that she was a nurse in the US, not overseas. She caught tuberculosis while she was there. She suffered from it for the rest of her life, though lived a long life until her death in 1970.
