We love maps.

We've discussed Bureau of Land Management records in another post or two. Another great land locator for you to keep in mind is Historic Map Works (www.historicmapworks.com). They have over 1.6 million historic maps and images that you can browse for free.

Once you have your ancestor's state, county and township, start viewing these maps to locate where they lived. Not all locations and time periods are available, but I've found a great many to aid in my research and to find current locations of ancestral homes and homesteads.
